<!-- ===================[ STORY BODY : RICH TEXT ]================= --> SALT LAKE CITY -- A third Salt Lake Valley resident has died from complications of the swine flu.
Doctors believe Francine Rushton, 47, and her mother contracted the flu from the same person several weeks ago.
The mother tested positive for type-A flu, and was treated with Tamiflu.
Rushton's brother, Craig Whitehead, told KSL his sister's tests initially came back negative, and doctors sent her home to get well.
"They sent her home, and then took her back three days later, this time to the hospital, very sick at this time. They tested her again. She tested negative again for the flu and they said just go home and drink fluids," said Whitehead.
When Rushton's condition continued to worsen, her family took her to Jordan Valley Hospital, where doctors found she was suffering from pneumonia, her kidneys were beginning to fail and her brain activity was beginning to slow.
Whitehead says she eventually ended up at Intermountain Medical Center Friday, where she got a positive test for the swine flu on Friday. He says by that time the flu had gone untreated for too long, and she died Saturday.
Salt Lake Valley Health officials say Rushton had underlying health conditions that contributed to her death. However, her family says she did not have problems with the organs that ultimately failed.
