What is the shelf life on these suppose to be? We opened a can today to try for the first time that was dated 2002 and they were nasty. Tasted stale and pretty much gagma.

I sure hope that there was something wrong with that specific can because I have a whole lot of those in my storage.

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.
I have a can of refried beans from June 2003 which I've had opened for a few years. Occasionally we'll eat some. They've been good every time.
Hopefully it's just that one batch.
