One year when we were going to have an early frost, Mom and I picked all the remaining green tomatoes, wrapped each one in newspaper, and put them in a box in a dark corner of the basement. We ate them until nearly Christmas. They weren't quite as good a vine-ripened, but better than the grocery store.
