    Cool Re-using canning jar lids

Being a child of the Great Depression, I can seldom throw away something that could be useful. Therefore, I wash and keep undamaged canning lids. This year, I used them to seal many the quarts and pints of jam and jelly we put up. Not a failed seal among them

Heartened by that, I used them on the dozens of sweet potatoes, persimmons, and late vegetables we canned. Again, no failures.

I'm quite relieved with this experiment, because in spite of the hundreds of new canning lids put by, I know that I wouldn't have nearly enough in case of a real extended emergency.

Thought this might be of interest to some of the hardy souls in this forum.

I re-used some lids this year and it's the first year I've really canned (311 total jars, in case you forgot ). I had no problems with them, either. I started taking off the lids veeerrry carefully, just so I can have a group of "reusable" lids as well as the brand new ones. Extended emergency is exactly what I was thinking, too.
Life's tough but it's tougher if you're stupid.
