if this is true, we are in for some serious trouble folks. We really only need to read history to see that this is not good. Especially if you couple this w/the latest legislation that is/was voted on listing what makes a terrorist, ie having a store of over 7 days worth of food!

Several questions pop to mind. Agents from which federal agency? Why does the lds.org website contain no mention of this? Why is the verification of this from an Oath Keepers representative, and not the Church?
I am not saying that this did not occur. However, it does seem to be the same minimal information story being spread across the internet. I shall wait for word from the Church itself before giving this story any credence.

Much takes place in this world that goes unreported by the church website.

Skimmed through the story. This would have to be a dry pack only cannery. If they sold wet pack, they would have to have customer info, because of quality recall issues. I've never been to a dry only cannery, do they still take customer info there?

Hmmm. 166 results on Google - this thing has been copied and pasted all over the place recently.

I can trace this back to September 12 on this website (http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread784305/pg1).

The oathkeepers website seems to be down right now.

I'm gonna keep the jury out on this one for a little bit.

I have used a dry pack cannery several times. Next time I will use a fictitious name and address and pay with cash as I have always done. I am a LDS guest by the way.

If you are acquainted with the federal list of "potential home-grown terrorists"* given out to state emergency agencies this year, you can take this at face value, and begin to think about getting at least some of your storage out of sight.

*PEOPLE WHO ARE POTENTIAL TERRORISTS:
anti-abortionists
have more than a 7 day food storage
have guns and ammo
Tea Party types

I don't have the article before me, but the list quite clearly targets anyone who disagrees with the push to force this country into socialism/communism.

Do you really think that the Church will report this publically?

Think I'll reserve judgement until more info is available.

As far as the church not posting it on LDS.org - I don't think they would post this even if it did happen.

I believe that if agents of the federal government demanded customer lists of an LDS cannery unrelated to the investigation of a specific crime, that the church hierarchy would be informed and would provide guidance to not only that cannery, but canneries nationwide. If the information was related to the investigation of a specific crime, the hierarchy would be informed, but there would be no need for wide dissemination. The report is worded in such a way as to make one believe it was the former.
The lack of specifics in the report is troubling. Which cannery? Since the alleged federal agents have already visited, surely naming the locality and the manager of the facility would lend credence. Which federal agency? FBI? DHS? USDA? What reason was given by the agents for wanting the information? Was there a warrant? If the agents served the manager of the cannery with a section 215 order*, then the manager could not have verified to the Oath Keeper what had occured, under penalty of law. Have any cannery managers been arrested that anyone has heard?
In reporting incidents, specific and verifiable information must be included. This report does not.
Again, as I previously posted, I am not saying this did not occur. I am saying that until the information can be verified, that it is suspect.

*In October 2001, Section 215 the USA Patriot Act granted the FBI the power to access and review "any tangible thing," including bookstore and library records. It also prohibited those served with Section 215 orders from disclosing the fact to anyone else.

Ok - the oathkeepers website is back up. The story appears in two places, here (http://oathkeepers.org/oath/2011/12/08/oath-keepers-alert-federal-agents-demand-customer-lists-from-mormon-food-storage-facility/?cp=all) and here (http://oathkeepers.org/oath/2011/12/09/1oath-keepers-alert-federal-agents-demand-customer-lists-from-mormon-food-storage-facility/). Both threads contain comments of skepticism, saying they've contacted canneries for verification and can't find any, claiming variations of this urban myth pop up ever year or two. One comment of note:

While this story has gone VIRAL all over the prepper world, a well placed phone call to the Public Relations department of the Church of Jesus Chris of Latter-Day Saints had this to say…

I just found the number on http://newsroom.lds.org/contact and spoke to a nice lady who answered the phone about my concern of having received this news from 2 seperate sources. Her response:

“You can tell your friends that this is a hoax…we have done a thorough investigation”.

I for one would very much like to hear from the ORIGINAL PERSON who claimed to have been there where the “FEDS” made this demand of the cannery staff.

Yeah, until I get more info, like the name and location of the cannery, so I can call them myself, I'm filing this under "sensationalistic hogwash".

There are only two storehouse locations in Tenn. so you could check for yourself. The link below has all the storehouse locations. Select eastern US.

Are we talking the dry pack portion of the Bishop's Storehouse? If so that, will be sad....our ward has a can sealer so we just go down to the nearest one, pick up the stuff, cans, lids, oxy packs, etc and bring it to whoever has the sealer at their house (which is mine right now) and spend a couple of hours working together and can up our stuff.

I can't see them closing down the welfare section of the storehouse though.

If the Bishop storehouses are closing, then perhaps this would be a prudent time to lay in additional goods. This would allow us to help should the need arise. I'd also suggest making or including food storage items as Christmas gifts, especially to those having a hard time money-wise.

I find myself skeptical of this as the Church just spent several million dollars to build a brand new larger bishops storehouse in Springville. It replaced the old Bishops Storehouse in Spanish Fork.

THey will basically replace the store house with "gift cards". The time has come for the church to be placed out of "firing scope" of any outside labels as such is being given by the government for those who do righteous things. Being an entity that has righteous principles could jeopardize their status into a different classification, if you know what I mean. The powers that be are gaining a tremendous grip on our freedoms. The Church is positioning itself, again to stay out of the national spotlight, avoid labeling and protect individuals and itself. Also, outside of Utah is where most of the store houses are being detached. President Benson's remarks are right on track and we all will soon as an individual fight for our individual freedom.

Here in the "mission field" there are no Bishop's Storehouses. Instead the church has an account at a local grocery store and a needy family works with the RSP to come up with a shopping list that is then filled at the grocery store.

I rather suspect that the event did happen but likely that the agents were not on an official case, just on assignment to test the limits of what they could find out and how fruitful "mining" the church FSC's might be. I'm not surprised to see a lack of reporting on it. The church does not want to attract attention to the issue and make members into potential targets and the gov does not want people to get too concerned.

Wow, I find this interesting and somewhat eye opening. There is a quote by President ??? where he was told that the Church would just barely begin to truly understand the Lord's welfare plan before it was desperately needed.
Sorry at work and do not have the quote.

Outside of Utah and other heavily "Mormon" areas (what prairiemom called the mission field) the Bishop's storehouses are spread around and not all members are within easy access of one. In St. Louis, the storehouse covers nearly all of eastern Missouri, plus nearly all of Illinois from Nauvoo to the south. In some states, like Pennsylvania, there are not any, but they are located in surrounding states.

Members in St. Louis can drive to the storehouse, but from my branch it takes about 1.5 hours to get there, sometimes through heavy traffic. Other areas are served by a truck that delivers welfare assistance food orders twice a month. It took a year but we finally got the truck to deliver to our building which helps the members a lot.

In areas where there is no easy access to a storehouse, the Bishop can use fast offering funds to buy from the local groceries. The RS president is in charge of determining the needs of the family and filling out the order, but only the Bishop can authorize it.

The St. Louis storehouse used to do wet pack canning, and I've done several myself. Very hot and hard work. The dry pack cannery still functions, but more and more ready to buy items are being received, like cases of #10 cans of wheat, rice, flour, etc. These can be bought off the shelves and cost only a little more than if you canned it yourself. Bulk items are still available and the storehouse still loans out the canning supplies to do your own canning. The Church does not want members doing canning in ward or branch buildings because all the dust clogs the air filters and are causing problems with the HVAC equipment.

I have no official word, but it may be true that the dry pack canneries may be shutting down because it is easier to just buy what is needed. In our storehouse, anyone can go there on Monday mornings and buy what they want. The storehouse manager tells me orders have increased threefold in the past couple of years, with most of it going to non-members.

The storehouse welfare part won't close down anytime soon.

Harold B. Lee, Conference Report, April 1941, p. 121.
“There is no individual in the Church that knows the real purpose for which the program (welfare) then launched had been intended, but hardly before the Church has made sufficient preparation, that reason will be made manifest, and when it comes it will challenge every resource of the Church to meet it. I trembled at the feeling that came over me. Since that day that feeling has driven me on, night and day, hardly resting, knowing that this is God's will, this is His plan. The only thing necessary today is that the Latter-day Saints everywhere recognize these men, who sit here on the stand, as the fountainheads of truth, through whom God will reveal His will, that His Saints might be preserved through an evil day.”

Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p. 260.

“The Lord is not unmindful of the temporal salvation of His Saints. Some of us saw the welfare program developed from its inception. The full purpose and intent of this inspired program has hardly been realized, and when we have passed through some of the tribulations that are in store for the world, we will see that this inspired plan was necessary to bring the Church to a condition of independence. The Church must become independent of the world—or, in other words, wholly self-sufficient. I quote from the revelation which established the united order in the early days of the Church, a revelation still awaiting fulfillment:
For verily I say unto you, the time has come, and is now at hand; and behold, and lo, it must needs be that there be an organization of my people, in regulating and establishing the affairs of the storehouse of the poor of my people, both in this place and in the land of Zion—
That you may come up unto the crown prepared for you, and be made rulers over many kingdoms. (D&C 78:3, 14-15.)
Apparently, there will be certain tribulations that will disrupt the nations of the world to the extent that the Church will have to be self-reliant. (Salt Lake City, Utah, June 6, 1980.)”

A year ago in the in this Welfare Services meeting, President Marion G. Romney made this comment: "I do not want to be a calamity howler. I don't know in detail what's going to happen in the future. I know what the prophets have predicted. But I tell you that the welfare program, organized to enable us to take care of our own needs, has not yet performed the function that it was set up to perform. We will see the day when we live on what and we produce."
