Meridian Magazine posted this news article today:

This appeared on the LDS Newsroom blog.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has received a number of inquiries about an alleged visit by federal officials to a Church canning facility in Tennessee seeking information about those who use the facility. The Church has investigated these claims and there is no basis for the rumors.

And in an interesting follow-up, the oathkeepers people are now passing the buck (http://oathkeepers.org/oath/2011/12/09/1oath-keepers-alert-federal-agents-demand-customer-lists-from-mormon-food-storage-facility/):
We have pulled this story about the Mormon cannery being visited by federal agents because the source of the information at the cannery is now denying that he ever told us that event occurred.

From now on, we will NOT post any such story based on what we are told by other people unless, and until, they are willing to go on video or at least on an audio recording with their info. That way, in case someone starts to crumble under the public attention or other pressures, and wants to deny what they told us, we have video or audio proof.

We get all kinds of scary intel, all the time, and we rarely pass it on because we don’t have confirming documentation. In this case, we were relying on a confirmed eye witness who is now denying it.Let's make sure we understand - Oathkeepers was never actually talking to a mormon, and they're not claiming any mormons are lying.

Oathkeeper's original sourcing:"This incident was confirmed, in person, by Oath Keepers Tennessee Chapter President, Rand Cardwell.
...
“A fellow veteran contacted me concerning a new and disturbing development. He had been utilizing a Mormon cannery near his home to purchase bulk food supplies."

So basically, some loudmouth buddy of an Oathkeeper was just making up some hogwash about stuff that never happened, and the oathkeeper took it and ran with it without checking.

Strike one for oathkeeper, but they did formally retract the story, so that's a bunt I guess.

Sounds like they got enough mud on their face that they plan on being more careful in the future. Let's hope they are. :d0 (25):
