Anyone have any recommendations on a vacuum sealer for a reasonable price? I would like to be able to use both the bags and the rolls. Being able to seal 5-gal mylar bags would be a plus but not a requirement.

There are a couple of sealer threads you can read for info.

I was reading them last week(i dont have a sealer) and decided to buy one that a local store had on clearance but when i got there they were sold out. They will honor that price when they get more in but i'm gonna check the thrift stores.
BTW, the GLO concensus seems to favor "Food Saver" brand.
I'm getting one thats very basic but will have an accessory connection for jar sealers.

I found a good food saver at a yard sale, and bought the jar sealers online at Amazon for around $12 for each size.

I have a food saver. I have had it for ten years and I use it almost every day. It is worth every penny we spent on it.

Make sure you get the jar attachments. I use that more than the bags. 1/2 gal jars are available and while they can not be used to ca things they are great for storing long term grains and stuff.

I LOVE my 1/2 gal canning jars! They most certainly can be used for canning. I have about 35 of them sitting in my food storage right now with home-canned apple juice.

I agree about the jar sealer--I also use that more than the bags.

I use the jar attachment when I open a #10 can of something and don't want the rest to go bad. You can pop the seal on a jar, take out what you want, and vacuum it back up again.

Well now, here's good timing: These two models of Food Saver sealers are on sale for a pretty good discount:
Here's their deluxo model at 44% off ($89.99): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F9PNF8?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creativeASIN=B000F9PNF8&linkCode=xm2&tag=provhomecomp-20
And a modest basic model at 30% off ($69.50): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0044XDA3S/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0044XDA3S&linkCode=as2&tag=provhomecomp-20

These are Amazon deals which typically only last for a day or two, so no guarantee how long this price is good for.

I saw those on your FB page, prairiemom! I wish I could pull the trigger on that first one right now. . .

Yeah, kind of a bummer when these good deals come up for a limited time. I'm glad you saw it. That's why I did the FB page--I was finding so many cool deals but they only lasted 1-2 days and I didn't want to clutter up my blog with all of them.
You'll have to check out the link I just put on the FB page for a DIY hydroponics plan. I'm so psyched to try this.

.

Just ordered that one. It's the best price I've seen on it.
