I have been waiting for grain prices to come down because grain prices have been very low internationally and farmers are sitting on their crops waiting for prices to go back up. It makes sense that farmers will try to sell their crops themselves in order to make a profit rather than selling wholesale. So this KSL ad might be the beginning of that...

I like the popcorn price and the gallon container spices at Sam's Club. Rice is often cheaper at Costco and Sam's but you should check and compare with the church's price.

If you need containers, Industrial Container Supply has reasonable prices. They have a gallon and half gallon container that are clear and you can use oxygen packs in them. It is nice if you just want to keep a bit in your kitchen and the rest somewhere else.

Last year's wheat crop was 14.9 percent protein, this year's crop will be 13.5 percent protein according to Kitchen Kneads. I know some people only buy Kitchen Kneads wheat because it is a better quality, if that is so, perhaps you want to get your wheat now before the new crop comes in, in November.

A lot of canneries and stakes have canning machines you can borrow and take home to can in #10 sized cans at home. They sell all the supplies you need at the canneries. When comparing prices between the cannery and buying in buckets you probably want to compare the canned prices.

That's what I have found. I could be wrong, but I don't think the church wheat is triple washed. I had a lot of grit and some small stones in the last back I opened.

I was able to purchase some wheat from Montana Milling thru a friend up there for $20 a bag. I have found that it is superior to most other available wheat. It is the same wheat sold by the Bosch Kitchen Centers. Lehi Roller Mills also has decent wheat but it has not been consistent. Some good, some bad.

I wonder what the price from local sources might be. We just placed an order in Nov. with a local farmer for wheat--$10 for 60 lbs, or about $16.80 for 100 lbs. And the pinto beans were $21 for 50lbs. The beans were only cleaned once, but the wheat was triple cleaned, so very nice wheat.

Except for the juice mix and potato pearls, all our local prices are the same or cheaper than HSC prices. And if you count in the 500 mi round trip to the cannery, we come out way ahead buying local.

Well that settles it for me. $250 mill or $4/bag savings. I've wondered what would happen if a small rock made it into the mill. I'm sure it would not end well.

It is interesting that while packaged goods continue to get smaller and the boxes emptier, the actual prices of grains has been coming down.

A container of oats at the Case Lot Sale was around $12 if I remember right...

The internet prices are VERY different from their stores that are located in So. California, Arizona, SLC and in Honeyville Utah. But the good news is that conference is coming up. Perhaps some people could get friends or family who are attending to shop for them.

Honeyville in SLC is at the back of the SLC airport business complex off of I-80 for anyone coming in from California it especially is not too far out of the way.

Char recommendations...each bean and grain have different amounts of nutrients and so it is good to get a variety of grains and beans if possible. That is why I included the 6 grain as a person buying their own (just one years worth) may want to have wheat, a six grain mix, parboiled rice (80 percent the nutrition of brown rice, brown rice is not recommended for longer-term storage), oats (oatmeal doesn't keep well so buy the whole grain and flake or sprout for breakfast cereal), and three kinds of beans for varied nutrition with the basics. <!-- / message --><!-- edit note -->

They claim that the dry ice method kills the germ for sprouting and that if you can keep it in a cool, dry place you don't need anything else for storage...I just talked to the expert about this for the Church and he says that carbon dioxide storage does not stop germination (sprouting) of wheat, buckets should be kept in dry conditions with low humidity (e.g. not where it is humid or stored directly on cement, dry ice must completely melt before sealing, etc)

There are about 12.5 cups of rice in a #10 can.
A #10 can of white rice contains 88 oz. (5.5 lb.)
1 cup of white rice weighs 7 oz.
1 six gallon bucket of white rice contains 43-44 lbs.
1 six gallon bucket of white rice = 8 #10 cans.
1 six gallon bucket of white rice contains 100 cups.
A typical serving is approximately 1/4 cup uncooked dry rice (1.75 oz.)

Using the Dry Ice Method with buckets (oxygen absorbers NOT recommended for plastic buckets as they are not completely air tight...unless you also use a mylar bag and heat seal the bag instructions are found on youtube - good method for humid areas)

Char's Recommendations...if I were buying just for one person and could spend a bit more I would buy two different kinds of beans like Kidney (Chile/Stews) and White (Baking bean "flour"/Soups/Bean "butter" for baking, and toasted beans and sprouting for snacks).

I would buy a variety of grains, e.g. parboiled rice, popcorn, oat groats, six grain mix of grains and White and Red Wheat.

A grinder is great to have, but you can also sprout most beans and wheat seeds for added nutrition (if the weather isn't too cold and you have enough water, supplies, etc.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but UT grows a lot of wheat doesn't it? I buy my wheat directly from the farmers here in ND and get it it quite a bit cheaper than these prices. It's just seems that if you could go direct to the farmer or at the very least the grain elevator, cutting out the middle man would save a lot of money. We just bought hard white wheat with very high protein content--15%--which makes for fluffier bread. $12 for 50 lbs.
